Sail on the Charles River, pedal your way down a scenic bike path or power-walk through town in search of Paul Revere. Bicycling and Walking There are a number of scenic bicycle trails in the area. The Emerald Necklace (617-635-4505) traverses nine parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (who also designed New York City's Central Park) and Charles Eliot. The Dr. Paul Dudley White Charles River bike path follows the river for nearly 17 miles, winding from Watertown square to the Museum of Science. The Stony Brook Reservation Bikeway is a four-mile route from Hyde Park to West Roxbury. For additional information on bike paths, call (617-727-9547). Bike rentals are available during the spring and summer at Community Bike Shop (617-542-8623) and year round at Lincoln Guide Service (781-259-9204). Boston is a pedestrian's dream, a city to be savored intimately, one step at a time. The Freedom Trail, Black Heritage Trail and Harborwalk are self-guided tours that lead visitors past famous historical sites. Walking tours and maps are provided by the national park service (617-242-5642). Boston park ranger tours (617-635-7383) guide visitors through Boston Common, the commonwealth avenue mall, emerald necklace and more. Boston by Foot (617-367-3766) has guided tours for children May 1 through October 31. The Cambridge Visitor Information Booth (617-441-2884), located on Harvard Square adjacent to the MBTA Station, offers maps of this lovely area. Fitness In Boston, you're never too far away from your daily workout. Winter Sports When the thermometer plunges below freezing, many Bostonians head for the nearest pond or lake for that ancient communal rite of winter, ice skating. the lake at Boston's public garden and the frog pond (617-635-4505) at Boston Common are popular locations. Hyde Park Rink on Turtle Pond parkway (617-364-9188) and north end rink on Commercial Street (617-523-9327) are also prime spots. If cross-country skiing is your thing, stony brook reservation, close to route 1, has about ten to 12 miles of cross-country trails. About 20 minutes west of Boston, on Park Road, the Weston Ski Track/Cross Country Center maintains lighted, groomed trails on the Leo J. Down by the river Sailboat rentals and instruction in sailing, racing and coastal navigation are available May through October with a half-day membership at courageous sailing center (617-242-3821). On the park like esplanade, Community Boating (617-523-1038) has two-day visitor membership for boat usage. Rent a canoe, sea kayak or rowing shell from Charles River Canoe and Kayak center (617-965-5110). Pro Sports There's no doubt about it - when it comes to professional sports, Boston has all the bases covered. The Boston Red Sox (617-267-1700) play at venerable Fenway Park, home of the infamous left-field wall known as the green monster. The AFC east football powerhouse New England Patriots (508-543-1776) hit the gridiron at Foxboro Stadium, 45 minutes south-west of Boston. The NHL Boston Bruins, winners of five Stanley Cups, take to the ice at fleet center, which also serves as home to the 16-time NBA Champion Boston Celtics, a club that has been graced with some of the most potent lineups of all time.
