This gracious palace that sits high on the cliffs of Pacific Grove overlooking the rocky coastline of the Monterey Bay, was built in 1899. In 1972 Norah and Homer Martine and their son Don purchased the Parke home. Twelve years later Don fully renovated the grand mansion. Careful attention has been given to restoring the fine Victorian interior details, with paint removed from the mahogany and oak trim, inlaid oak and mahogany floor stripped and refinished. Furnishings have been carefully selected for each room to fit the style, size and ambiance of that room. Most of the furnishings are museum quality with preference for American antiques from 1800 through 1890. The entire process of the design, furnishing, decorating and services for guests is to recreate the experience one would have had if they had been the individual guests of the Parkes at the turn of the century.

The Mahogany Room:
Welcome to the Mahogany room. This delightful room greets you with a private porch and personal garden. Enter through the unusual wide paneled glass door into the oldest building in the complex, 1887, with 10 ft. ceilings.
The Garden Room:
Welcome to the Garden room - formerly the maid?s quarter?s living room that faced the courtyard. There was a brick floor that was just set on the ground.
The Brass Room:
Welcome to the Brass room - located in the cottage adjacent to the main inn. This stylish room is tucked away for privacy and most loved by guests who seek an intimate escape from daily life.
The Cottage Room:
Welcome to the Cottage room - a romantic hideaway in a separate 1904 building with shiplap siding and above one of Don?s historic cars. The multiple floor levels were created to let in the tall, older cars below and produce a bed height that affords a great view down 3rd Street to the water.
The California Room:
Welcome to the California room - a spacious room that continues to delight guests with its blend of elegance and stylish comfort.
The Fountain Room:
Welcome to the Fountain room - named for the Serpent Fountain in the courtyard that you can see so well from this guest room. The navy blue wall covering works well because of the southwest orientation of this room and two walls of windows.
The Malarin Room:
Welcome to the Malarin room - a truly historic guest room that contains furniture made for the Malarin family - a very wealthy family in Monterey County that received 250,000 acres from the queen of Spain. This furniture was exhibited in the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1893.
The Victoriana Room:
Welcome to the Victoriana room - an especially romantic guest room and a popular favorite with couples in love! This room has five matching pieces that we were lucky to find, one at a time. Its location is also of interest. This guest room is on the ground floor and was once the cooks? quarters. It had only 6 ? foot ceilings so the floor had to be dug out and lowered.
The Pineapple Room:
Welcome to the Pineapple room - named after the symbol of hospitality - the pineapple. It is rumored that if the pineapple finials on the bed were removed during your stay, the host was telling you, you were no longer welcome.
The Captains Room:
Welcome to the Captains room - a special place within the Martine Inn ? appointed with historic d?cor that continues to inspire romance and relaxation. Of note, the Captains room was the maintenance room for the complex and then the shop where Don did his engine restoration.
The Carriage Room:
Welcome to the Carriage room - a popular room with guests who enjoy the garden setting offered by this stylish room.
The Monterey Room:
Welcome to the Monterey Room - a secluded room that was once the maid?s bedroom quarters. Still remaining from its historic beginnings is the impressive rough-plastered archway that once led to the outside.
The Eastlake Room:
Welcome to the Eastlake room - one of the most popular rooms with guests who enjoy sitting by the window and watching waves crash against the rocks, otters swimming in the secluded coves and sailboats gliding along the Monterey Bay.
The Jenny Lind Room:
Welcome to the Jenny Lind room - the one time kitchen and dining room for the maid?s quarters. This popular guest room is named after the former coloratura that was introduced around the world by P.T. Barnum. Her busts are carved on the furnishings.
Marie's Room:
Welcome to Marie?s room - named after Marie Oliver who was a niece of the Parkes. She lived in this room for over 20 years. She was very helpful in the restoration through her memory of the original building.
The Rolled Oak Room:
Welcome to the Rolled Oak room - named for the Quarter Sawn rolled oak fireplace and armoire. This style of oak furnishings is not done much any more as it wasted too much wood.
The Walnut Room:
Welcome to the Walnut Room, an especially charming and romantic room! This room was an open area under the nephew?s bedroom which was on poles. Smaller scale furnishings, 3 French doors and garden views make this small room feel quite large.
The Art Deco Room:
Welcome to the Art Deco room - one of the most fashionable rooms with guests who enjoy privacy, an artistic flare for ambiance, and perhaps a good book by the fireplace.
The Edith Head Room:
Welcome to the Edith Head room - a delightful room for guests who enjoy both luxury and comfort...a bit of silver-screen history as well. The Edith Head Room is named after the famous clothes designer for the movies who received eight Academy Awards. This is her bedroom suite and portrait that she had commissioned of herself. This once was Uncle Jimmy?s apartment. Edith Head owned this bedroom set and sold it at auction just before moving into the motion picture home and nine months later passing away from cancer. She has won more academy awards than any other person and was nominated for 35 Oscars.
The Empire Room:
Welcome to the Empire room - once the living room for Mr. Parke?s nephew. Distinctive to this room is the very unusual king sized 4-poster canopied bed. It was originally made from a set of attached twin beds that had a canopy over both and were separated by a 3 foot walkway.

Welcome to the Parke room - a stunningly romantic suite that overlooks the rocky coastline of the Monterey Bay. This room was the original master bedroom and has stayed that way, even during Don Martine?s occupation of the house. From the front of this room, you can watch both the sunrise and sunset.
The Early American Room:
Welcome to the Early American room - an enchanting room with interesting antiques... some with a story to tell. For example, this inviting room has an 1800 rope bed with the holes for the ropes in it. The ropes crisscrossed the frame with a straw filled muslin bag on top and the ropes needed to be tightened to prevent the bed from sagging. Thus the phrase, "sleep tight and don?t let the bed bugs bite."
